HATS! HATS! HATS! KNIT IN - October 3, 2009 - Harborfields Library Greenlawn. NY |
|
Over 75 people gathered on Saturday, October 3rd to knit and crochet hats. While the music played participants knit and hooked away. Some chose to visit the ongoing demos for hat toppers, felting and spinning. Chapters welcomed people to their tables with inviting centerpieces. Needle workers used both their own stash of yarn and donated yarn from the baskets on each table. And the bell rang when a hat was finished.
We collected over 600 hats from the Knit In. These along with the hats that were sent in to CARE TO KNIT and received from collection centers totaled over 1,000 hats!
Thank you to all who participated. The hats were sorted and delivered to those in need through the following local charities:
- Ronald McDonald House / Schneider’s Hospital
- Winthrop Hospital Cancer Center for Kids
- The River Fund
- HELP Suffolk
- Family Service League
- Breast Cancer Support Groups

hanging in the back. On the stage were the raffles and information about knitting
shops. A Show & Tell of finished projects by our knitters was featured on the table.
Local knitting shops supported this event. We want to thank Three Black Sheep in
St. James, Knitting on the Lamb & the Knitting Corner in Huntington, Knitters
Therapy in Northport, and Infinite Yarns in Farmingdale for helping us advertise.
|
|
Three Black Sheep even organized their knitters to make squares and will be
donating a finished blanket. Knitters Therapy kindly donated items to our raffle.
At one time we had over 80 people knitting and crocheting the blanket squares.
During the Knit In we had three demonstrations – An Adventure with Cables,
Creating a Project with the Drop Stitch, and How to Fix Your Mistakes. A special
thank you to our advanced knitters for sharing their expertise.
|
|
A group of knitters volunteered to come and sew together the squares. They
worked all day and left with 7 blankets to finish. A special thank you to these
women.
|
|
Needlers began knitting and crocheting before the event. Four completed blankets
were donated that day. We had fun at the Knit In and celebrated as each square was
finished by ringing a bell. All totaled, so far – we have 403 squares!! How thrilling
is that. The work is not finished. We must sew those squares together. So far, we
have 11 finished blankets!! It is amazing what a community can do when given the
challenge.
|
Here are some of the finished blankets for all to see. The boys and girls that receive
them are sure to feel the love that went into creating them.
